Dear Members
"THE CHALLENGE"
On Saturday 20th February, 47 gymnasts from our 3 squads(aged between 8 & 19) will undertake a marathon sponsored tumbling challenge in aid of the Unicef Haiti Earthquake Children's Appeal.
I'm sure everyone cannot fail to have been moved by the plight of the people of Haiti in the aftermath of the earthquake that ravaged the country last month. Unicef have been instrumental in providing relief to the devastated region but need your help more than ever to reach out to the hundreds of thousands still in desperate need of aid. Haiti is one of the poorest countries in the world. The children of Haiti will undoubtedly remain challenged for the rest of their lives, many of them orphaned with no family to care for them.
The gymnasts and coaching staff of Shirley Gymnastics Club wanted to contribute in some small way towards the relief effort in recognition of the challenge the children of Haiti now face. We wanted to do our own "challenge" to raise as much as we can for this worthy cause and fantastic charity.
Our challenge is to do a sponsored Tumbling session non stop for a total of 8 hours, from 10am to 6pm in the gymnasium at Monks Hill. Each tumble must be unassisted, and for the entirety of the event, a gymnast must be on the track at all times. The challenge is to do 7,000 somersaults within the time limit. As you know from either watching or speaking to your own children, this represents a serious challenge, but one the team of gymnasts are relishing. Each somersault will be counted by an adjudicating panel of volunteers, and we sense the drama towards the end of the day will be immense.
Whatever we are able to raise in terms of sponsorship will not be anywhere near enough given the devastation in Haiti, but please help us with "our challenge" so that we can help the children of Haiti with theirs.
How can you help? Well you can click on the link above and donate any amount of money for this challenge. You are all also very welcome to come along next Saturday and cheer/support the gymnasts as loudly and enthusiastically as you can, I'm sure they will need it and appreciate it. Please feel free to forward this link onto friends/family/work colleagues to spread the word. We really do want to make a difference to the lives of thousands of children in Haiti
Thank you
